Hello,
There are many ways of meditating in the world and this thread will mainly cover the basics for those who would like to increase their self-control and conscious awareness.
Starting out
The one who has never meditated has missed out on something that may be fairly important when it comes to spiritual growth. The main purpose of meditation is to reach the inner spirit and grow this spirit so that it take precedence in your daily life to increase your ability to be able to reflect and contemplate with the spirit "on-the-fly" in your life so that it expresses itself in your actions and skilled meditators can manage to bring their trance with them while they are not meditating. The actions and deeds themselves will grace the performer to further grow and an important chain begins. You become nearer to the Spirit of the Sustainer. The other positive aspect of meditation is that you become more calm because your spirit has potential not different from the Sustainer and this is the purpose of your growth, i.e. to grow into completion. The meditation, if practiced in a good way, will reduce the connection to the flesh/body and increase the spiritual awareness, hence that the practice is good.
When a completely inexperienced person begins to meditate it might not feel as giving any particular results at all and thus many beginners give up relatively fast and say meditation is not for them. Meditation can take a long time to get it to give results, and that particularly for the person who were already absorbed very much in the flesh/body to begin with since it takes a while to break a bad habit. For them, it feels usually just like you sit and do nothing, and the spirit is clouded from expressing itself to their consciousness. It takes quite a while to get over this threshold and one needs patience but also faith in it. It may help to think and contemplate extra much in their lives and not take everything for absolute as it is.
The beginner may notice that they should be doing this as an inexperienced user when beginning to meditate. It is important not to be tired when being a beginner since you may be distracted by feelings of falling asleep and it may actually exercise the mind better to have completed some kind of physical activity beforehand. Any sort of "mantra" is not necessary, but it may help some people.
Short-term results
Do this for as long as you can, usually the longer the better, but not usually necessarily more then 20-40 minutes for a beginner. The purpose in the initiation process is simply to have patience enough to feel it makes a difference and the initial signs is that you feel calmer when you are not actually meditating. Even so when you are not meditating it is important that you seek the spirit that you have enabled to be closer to your conscious awareness so that you are more controlled and aware of being. Remember that relaxed contemplation is a form of meditation when you concentrate on your thinking and the meditative techniques may be utilized when you reflect upon something and it is very important that you work hard on controlling your emotions. Many people, including me, actually enter into meditation when we contemplate.
Long-term results
Successful meditators may gain a so-called "Permanent Meditative Trance" as a result of the meditation practice. It means that they are basically always meditating. The truth is that they actually "know their spirit" and their actions, decisions and deeds are made with the perfect spirit that grows stronger by day of being in the light. This is what Jesus means with "know yourself". In the Semitic languages spirit and person share very nearly related words: Spirit Nas ناس and person nafs نفس. The actual person (nafs) is determined upon the الناس al-nas which refers to 'spirituality'.
Probably to be continued.
Be well

- Find a comfortable position that does not take away concentration but not comfortable enough so that you receive feelings of sleep. Traditional meditation positions may help. Test yourself
- Close the eyes
- Take deep controlled breaths
- Remove thoughts of everything that you have on your mind.
- Do away with any both positive or negative emotional feelings.
- Continue to take deep controlled breaths for a while but soon change not to reflect much on the breathing.
- Actually try to feel the body but have the intention of "thinking away" with it. Reflect on the saying of Jesus: "Separate the spirit from the flesh".
- Try to search for your inner spirit while in this concentration.
- When you actually find the right state of mind you will feel like "hooked onto" something. May take many meditation sessions until this step.
