The idea of being the first and becoming the winner to show one`s own advantage over others is a "great" thing and a thing to strive for among humans. However, how do things look like from a bigger perspective?
Jesus talked about it, and here are His sayings :
Matthew 20:24-28 -NIV: When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Mark 9:35 - NIV: Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”
Matthew 18:3-5 - NIV: And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
Matthew 23:11-12 - NIV: The greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Yes, it has to do with the instinct of the human. If striving to be the first, this is breaking a Commandment and you work to win which is an instinct of dominance.
The real "winner" is the one who does not choose to be first but does not work to win at all.
